Optimization of hydrogen production by Halobacterium salinarium coupled with E coli using milk plasma as fermentative substrate
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the fermentative hydrogen production by coupled system of Halobacterium salinarium and E. coli. Increase in the light intensity from 6000 lux to 12000 lux and changing the inoculums level of E coli resulted in 10 fold increase in the rate of hydrogen production using the coupled system. Statistical based design of experiments was applied to optimize the rate of hydrogen production using milk plasma, popularly known as cheese whey, a dairy industry b

Lignocellulolytic enzymes produced by tropical white rot fungi during biopulping of Acacia mangium wood chips
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
Pycnoporus coccineus and Coriolus versicolor are among the tropical white rot basidiomycetes that degrade lignin selectively. In this research work, crude enzyme produced during biopulping using both fungi were extracted, filtered and assayed using specific substrates. Both the peroxidases enzyme activities and residual lignin content were measured for the incubation period of 20, 40 and 60 days of biopulping. For both fungi, manganese peroxidase is predominant and highly expressed thus shows th

Amycolatopsis alba var. nov DVR D4, a bioactive actinomycete isolated from Indian marine environment
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
The taxonomic position of a bioactive marine isolate, strain DVR D4 was established using a polyphasic approach. The organism merits species status in the genus Amycolatopsis according to the chemical and phenotypic data. Phylogenetic analysis of the strain based on its 16S rDNA sequence shows that there was 100% pair-wise similarity and identity with no nucleotide gaps with the species Amycolatopsis alba strain DSM 44262. As the organism was distinguished with substantial differences in some of

Mechanism of arsenic tolerance and bioremoval of arsenic by Acidithiobacilus ferrooxidans
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
This paper reports the studies on mechanism of arsenic tolerance and bioremoval of arsenic ions (arsenite or arsenate) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. Exposure of cells to arsenic ions resulted in increased cell surface hydrophobicity, decreased electrophoretic mobility and stronger adsorption affinity towards arsenopyrite. The mechanism of tolerance to arsenic ions were specific and could be attributed to the changes in specific protein expression in the outer membrane and cytosolic membrane

Orgene: An organ based categorized human genome database
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
OrGene is an organ based categorized human genome database developed for the categorization of human genome on the basis of organs. The function of the proteins encoded by these genes is also made available. OrGene will expand in future to other organs, genes and cover more useful information of other species. Primers provided for each gene, with their features and conditions given to facilitate the researchers, are useful in PCR amplification, especially in cloning experiments. Flexible databas

Parametric constraints on the dynamic behavior of immobilized enzyme kinetics in a microreactor
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
The observed kinetics of reactions catalyzed by immobilized enzymes in microreactors may differ from their kinetics in well-mixed solution-phase reactors. While the steady-state differences have been analyzed before, the time-dependent differences have not been explored. In the present study, therefore, an initial feasibility analysis has been conducted to identify permissible regions for the kinetic parameters for dynamics solutions to exist. For a reaction catalyzed by alkaline phosphatase, it

Seeds of rosary pea, Abrus precatorius : A novel source of hydroxynitrile lyase
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
Seeds of Abrus precatorius (rosary pea) were identified as a new and potential source of hydroxynitrile lyase. Hydroxynitrile lyase from the seeds of this plant was purified up to 9 fold with specific activity of 577 Umg-1 protein by using ion exchange and gel filtration chromatographic techniques. The purified enzyme was a heteromer with estimated native molecular mass 205 kDa and its subunits showed two bands of molecular mass of 42.0 and 36.5 kDa in SDS-PAGE, respectively. The enzyme exhibite

Adsorption of hemoglobin, fatty acid and glucose to iron nanoparticles as a mean for drug delivery
Written by   Published On Issue 2 Vol 3, 2011
Recent research in biomedicine has documented the application of iron-based nano-particles in supplying the human body with essential nutrients or in drug delivery systems.   In this work, the possibility of using iron nanoparticles sorption of biomaterial, such as hemoglobin, cholesterol, triglyceride, serum albumin, and glucose, to cure some specific syndromes have been studies. Bradford assay was used for protein adsorption measurement in supernatant, and FTIR was used for studying the l
